Jodie had a feeling that she was going to be spending a lot of her free time in the ruins that rimmed the mana dorm. If only she’d known about this island sooner! She could’ve gone to this academy in there youth, grown up with the ghosts of the ruins and that mansion over yonder. No, she was a little too restless. She was restless now, but back when she was first starting out, this island would’ve lasted her a year at most. The island would’ve been wasted on her young self.

So, she’d enjoy it to her fullest now. Jodie traversed through the ruins, Caliburn on her back (as per usual) and Rhoda trotting alongside her. Her favorite places to explore were the old houses, mostly intact and at least somewhat dry on the inside. She’d found just such a place - a small structure with three rooms and an ajar door.

While Jodie snooping the mostly looted house, investigating crumbling walls and small nooks, Rhoda made a beeline for what must’ve been the kitchen and began poking around in one of the cupboards. Houses like this always had something to hide, some story from owners past. Jodie was intent on figuring it out. Rhoda was intent on finding food.

Rhoda had not found food and instead had found was was a very large spider. She was also quickly finding that jumping about and scratching at it was not going to get the thing off her nose. The poochyena was out of ideas. So as Jodie was coming from the far room to see what the commotion was all about, Rhoda came and sat at her feet, panting.

Jodie crouched down to survey the situation. “Hmm, yes, she seems to be pretty stuck on you, Rhoda.” She observed. She gave the spinarak a tug. The spinarak didn’t budge. Jodie gave the situation another second of thought, and came up with a stunning plan. She gave the spinarak another tug.

The spinarak did indeed come loose. She came flying off of the poochyena’s nose, six arms raised, little clipper horns snapping, and upset thorax raised, directly at Jodie’s face. Jodie let out a startled yelp as fifteen pounds of spider slammed into her chest and raised arms. Rhoda began barking, helpfully.

“Bite! Bite!” Jodie yelled. The poochyena snapped to attention. Propelled by strong back legs, the little black dog launched herself at the spinda, her mouth agape. The spinarak hissed as fangs sank into her back. Her retaliation was a pin missile, shot at the dark type without a solid footing. Jodie rolled away. Rhoda bit again.

Jodie had to think fast. Rhoda was inexperienced against pokemon she was strong against, let alone ones with a type advantage. This fight would go to the spinarak, and soon Jodie would have both an unconscious poochyena and a very angry spider on her hands and possibly face. She needed backup. So, she reached into her bag, snatching the first pokeball her hand met, and threw.

As it so happened, the pokeball she had grabbed was empty. Where there was supposed to be a strong, fully evolved pokemon to scare away the spinarak, there was now a lack of any pokemon at all. The ball shook, and then clicked.

Jodie looked at Rhoda, who looked back at Jodie. The dog tilted her head. “Well,” Jodie gasped, leaning down to pick up the pokeball, “I guess that resolves that.” Jodie hoped that was the last of the living secrets she’d encounter today.
