And so Jodie went back about her business of exploring the ruins. The house, now devoid of jump scares, was also devoid of any other points of interest, and quickly lost Jodie’s. She left the house behind, wandering back out into what was once a place where people lived, until, at last, she came upon a pond.

Jodie couldn’t see far into the murky water, but it seemed to have once been a man-made pool. Rain and weathering had grown the water above the stone carved to contain it six inches below the surface. Various aquatic plants grew on the water’s top, and the tall grass got as close to the edge as its roots could handle without being drowned.

“Well, this seems like a good place to have lunch.” Jodie mused. Rhoda barked in happy agreeance. Jodie sat down in the grass beside the pond and Rhoda sat beside her, and from her pack she drew out a sandwich for herself and a bag of dark-type food for the poochyena.

It got really quiet. The kind of quiet where something had to be up, because nature never orchestrated this kind of silence by itself. The fur on Rhoda’s back stood on end and a growl escaped her lips (along with several bits of half-crewed pellets). On some whim, Jodie looked up. Above them was a dot in an otherwise clear sky - dark, round, and growing quickly closer.

She had a feeling what was coming next. In one motion, Jodie wrapped an arm under the poochyena stomach and rolled them both to the side, as a pokemon crashed into the ground where Rhoda had stood moments before.

It was one of those things. When she had first gone to Unova, Jodie had nothing against sigilyphs. Then she went to the Desert Resort and was robbed of her pokedex in a flurry of tasseled wings and psychic attacks, and had to spend the next three days chasing them down to get it back.

Jodie knew what she was going to do, or more accurately, what she wasn’t going to do. The sigilyph seemed to be temporarily distracted by Jodie’s fallen sandwich and her own long monologue of angry clicks and wizzes, but another sky attack wasn’t going to be long away. Setting down the barking poochyena, Jodie whispered, “Rhoda, let’s go get cream puffs back at the academy.” Any anger the pokemon felt towards the sigilyph for disrupting her meal quickly dissolved away into a wagging tail. Trainer and pokemon made a run for it.
