In a world where magic is a real, complex, addicting reality, nothing is worse than choice. Too much choice, to be precise. Those gifted with magic--and every magician is "gifted" beyond the ability to cast spells--face a life of total freedom and total ennui. Magic can become a corrupting influence, warping the psyche with unlimited promise but little or no meaning. Those who keep their heads, who leash magic to their will, become the secret paragons of society. Some work their entire lives to save the world from fear and ignorance, while others resign to the thankless job of policing their own kind.

Those in power have come to believe that a great threat looms over the world. A dark intellect from another world weaves threads of intrigue with magic and dark intent. Even as our leaders prepare themselves for the inevitable conflict, are magicians ready to face this threat?
