She’d gotten very lucky back on the mountain and achieved her most immediate goal. That left her with her secondary goal of just catching different species until she figured out how she was going to win her coordination ribbons. At least that was easy. She picked an area at random that she hadn’t yet explored and headed there as soon as she felt up to it, ready to add a new species to her family. It didn’t really matter to her which new species. Not this time. Pretty much anything would further her goals.

That was how she found herself on top of a rocky cliff overlooking much of the island. It had been a bit of a hard climb, but she’d managed, and now she had a pretty view to stare at while she rested. The young girl was sitting a short distance away from the edge of the plateau, her gaze shifting from the view to her immediate surroundings. Getting to see the island like this was rewarding enough, but she couldn’t let that take all her focus – she was still here to work.

She waited there for a while, and eventually she caught a glimpse of a shape moving between the rocks. It took a moment for it to appear again, and when it did she noticed…what in the world was that Pokemon? She pulled her Pokedex out of her bag and scanned it, frowning at the information. It was apparently something called “Scraggy” and had a dark/fighting type combination. That was…unique. She stared at the Pokemon, watching as it wandered around. She had a choice here – fight it, catch it, or both. It was one she didn’t have, so it couldn’t hurt to try for it, right? Besides, it might be decent for contests.

Eh, why not? She pulled a pokeball out of her bag and released the Pokemon inside. Fluorite appeared between her and the Scraggy, took one look at the wild Pokemon, and squeaked before hiding behind her trainer.

“Oh, you’re fine…” Toni smiled at the Noibat, giving her a scratch behind her ears. “You’re going to have to get used to this at some point, and you have an advantage over one of its types. This will be good for you.”

Fluorite peered around her trainer at the Scraggy, who was now watching them. Toni frowned at the Pokemon. Was it smiling? With a mouth like that, it was hard to tell, but it seemed to be looking forward to the battle.

After a moment, Fluorite inched away from her trainer, watching the Scraggy nervously. Toni felt a little bad, but this really was good for the timid Pokemon. If she won this battle, it was sure to boost her confidence.

“Let’s give it an Air Slash, all right?” Toni called to the batlike Pokemon. Fluorite turned to her, giving her a look she couldn’t read, but then faced her opponent. Her wings started to glow a light blue, and she flapped them, sending what seemed to be energy blades toward the Scraggy.

The Scraggy let out a cry and retaliated with a Low Kick. The move didn’t seem to hurt Fluorite much, but it did scare her, and she took to the air. The flying/dragon flew in erratic circles around her opponent, letting out a series of squeaks while her opponent let out its own series of sounds that sounded suspiciously like laughter.

“Fluorite, it’s okay! Please calm down,” Toni called to her Pokemon, her frown increasing. Maybe this was too soon? They couldn’t give up now, though. If she called Fluorite back, it would only reinforce her fear of battle. “You can do this! One more Air Slash should do it.”


It took a couple moments, but eventually, Fluorite made the attack. As before, her wings flowed, and she flapped them to release an energy attack at the Scraggy. The Scraggy stopped laughing as the attack hit and gave the Noibat the creepiest not-quite-glare that Toni had ever seen.

The Scary Face sent poor Fluorite flying in erratic circles again, but that was fine. Toni thought they’d weakened it enough. She pulled out an empty pokeball and tossed it at the Scraggy, watching as it disappeared inside. The abll shook violently for what felt like forever, but then fell still, and Toni retrieved it while Fluorite calmed down.

“You did really well!” Toni congratulated the Pokemon. “See? You won!” She looked around and then started back home. “Let’s go get the others and see how much money we have. If there’s enough, I can take you all out for treats later.”

The Noibat squeaked and followed after her trainer, flying near her shoulder as the two left the Academy’s Edge behind.
