He wasn’t sure what it was that brought him back to this place. He supposed the Garden of the Sun was nice enough, and traveling through it was an easy walk rather than a hike up a mountain or through some ancient ruins. His Frogadier River hopped alongside him, glancing around from time to time as she helped him look for their newest friend. Even if she hadn’t been helping him look, he was glad of her company. It made the tedium of Pokemon hunting so much easier to bear.

Luke made his way to the lake and sat down. They were sure to see something if they just waited here. River hopped into the lake and swam around while they waited.

Eventually, something came out of the flower field and made its way to the lakeshore. Luke watched the odd creature as it drank greedily from the water. That was…a Zigzagoon, right? They were a normal type, and fairly common and unimpressive, but sometimes they had a certain ability that could prove useful to him.

River seemed to notice the Pokemon, too, because she swam over and croaked at it. She was trying to be friendly, but her size and sudden appearance must have scared the poor thing, because it yelped and charged behind him, shivering.

“It’s all right. She won’t hurt you.” Luke twisted around and slowly started petting the Zigzagoon, trying to keep from startling it. It amused him that it trusted him more than the Frogadier, but he wasn’t a Pokemon, and humans weren’t known for attacking Pokemon directly. “She just wants to make friends.”

River pulled herself out of the water and took a couple steps toward Luke and the Zigzagoon. She didn’t get closer, though, probably to avoid scaring the wild Pokemon further. The Zigzagoon remained where it was for a few moments, but then cautiously approached and sniffed the Frogadier, who crouched down so she wouldn’t be looming.

“See? Isn’t that nice?” He smiled at the Zigzagoon. “Why don’t you join us? There won’t be anything to be skittish about with River looking out for you.”

River croaked a few times at the Zigzagoon, who tilted its head at her. It seemed to be considering their offer. Then it bounded toward him, its tail swishing happily behind it.

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” Luke tossed an empty pokeball at the Zigzagoon and waited as it shook a few times. Once it became still, he retrieved it and started back home, River hopping along behind him.
