[Celeste Bonnaire]

Celeste her arms above her head, eyes closed blissfully as she felt the tightness slip from her muscles and joints. She had been sitting in the same position for a good hour, making final preparations for a good hour before class started. Today's lecture was going to be rather extensive, and she wanted to make sure that everything was as clear as possible, for her students' sakes. Although Celeste was a world-renown coordinator, she felt no shame in admitting that it took her quite a while to master the finer points of the subject of today's lecture. So, gathering up the many printouts she had made, Celeste handed them to a waiting Haxorus.

"Thank you, Damien," she smiled at him as the dragon-type Pokémon walked to the open doorway, ready to pass the papers out to the students as they walked in. The desks hadn't been touched since the last lesson, so there was no need for Noelle or Yvain to rearrange them, and both Pokémon were enjoying their time off. Or, rather, Noelle was enjoying herself, teasing Yvain as he snapped at her irritably. Regardless, Celeste trusted them not to get out of hand, and just left them be; she would warn them to stop before the students entered the room. Alaire and Elaine were sitting along the walls of the room, snoozing together in the lazy hours of the afternoon.

In the meantime, she turned on the overhead projector, waiting a moment for it to warm up, before setting up a slideshow on her computer. "Simple Strategies and Implementation" was displayed across the whiteboard in big, bolded letters. Satisfied that it was easy to read, even from the back of the room, Celeste poured herself another cup of tea — she made it a point never to let the teapot sitting on her desk go empty — and leaned back against the wall to wait for class to start.

[Finley Morrow]

Finley had been waiting for this for the past week. The moment she discovered the date and time of the coordination lecture, she’d cleared her callender. She’d set a time reminder on her pokedex for an hour before the class begun - time was very rarely on her side in situations like this, and she was not about to be bested and made late for class by a distracted mind today. This would be the first class she’d taken on her topic of study. While battle classes were useful in all cases, all of what she would learn here was sure to be relevant to reaching her goals.

Brian trotted alongside Finley as she paced towards the classroom. As was her intention, she was somewhat early - the door to the classroom opened as she was turning the corner into the last hallway. She took a sheet of paper from the haxorus - as a quick look at the pokedex told - and took a seat in one of the front desks. Brian balanced carefully on the head of her chair.

Taking a moment to locate the teacher, she put on a smile. “Hello, Miss…” Finley searched for a nameplate of some sort, but found she didn’t have to. Her eyes grew wide and her voice quiet as Finley realized who her teacher was. “Celeste Bonnaire. You’re famous.”

Finley looked down as she mentally shook herself. She hadn’t anything else really to say, but she had to say something else. “I haven’t ever seen a altaria that color before.” She said, her eyes resting on the somewhat familiar pokemon. Her mother had raised one, but her altaria had been blue.

Mallory had no real interest in coordination, but she was a student and like any good little student she was toddling off to class. She supposed such things could be useful should her dream of being successful in battles fail. Though, with Sol by her side, she doubted that would happen. Even as she approached the classroom, the Growlithe lifted his head and looked around, watching for trouble as usual.

Although she had brought along a full party- all but Sol being in their PokeBalls, of course- the Squirtle she had with her was not Diver, her usual Squirtle. No, this was a female Squirtle, one with no name and no experience in battling but, Mallory hoped, would still prove useful.

She entered the room and took a sheet of paper before quietly finding a seat close to the back. "Hello," she murmured shyly to both the teacher and the only other student currently present as she sat down. Sol sat obediently beside her, alert and watchful.

[Violette Minique]

When Violette saw this class open she immediately signed up to see what the class was all about. Of course she wasn't much of a coordinator but it didn't hurt to learn anything on the matter. It could prove to be useful in battles in general. It was too bad she got here after the first class, she would hope that some notes from last class would be covered in this one. Violette arrived early but it seemed that two students arrived here before her. That was okay there was still time to introduce herself.

She and Velvet her Gothorita walked over to the teacher, curtsying slightly to the woman.

"Good morning Miss Bonnaire, my name is Violette Minique. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Violette was quite aware how famous Miss Bonnaire was, her mother worked with coordinators all the time and would constantly talk about the other. This should be a good class, after she introduced herself and awaited the other's reply she would take her seat in the second row of the class.

[Lilith Sinclaire]

Lilith always thought that she had all of her life goals planned out for the most. Infact, before she even started attending Gray Haven Academy, she knew that she wanted to become a breeder and a researcher. So far, she had been working extremely hard on reaching those goals. However, recently she found herself wanting to chase another goal. A new class known as Coordination had been offered to the students. The term coordination itself wasn't a new term for her. Her mother once took a career as a Pokemon Coordinator back in her time before becoming the owner of the prestigious dance theatre back in her hometown. Her mother shared a few of her tips with her daughter in hopes that someday she would choose to follow her path. Unfortunately for her mother, she decided to choose a different path. At least until now that is. She was rather graceful and elegant thanks to her years of training as a dancer and she other battled in an artistic style at times. Therefore, she figured that becoming a coordinator may not be a bad decision to add to her list of goals. 

A small smile formed again Lilith's lips as she enter the classroom with pure grace and elegance. It take her azure eyes long to identify a couple of familiar faces. She greeted her classmates with a friendly wave and performed a respectful bow to the teacher before making her way towards an empty seat not too far away from Finley. "Hi Finley." She smiled as she started to unpack her notebook and purple writing pen from her back pack. She then took the sheet of paper that she received from Damien a couple of minutes ago and carefully started reading over it. Now, she just had to wait for the famous Ms. Bonnaire to start her class.

She was running a bit late today. Not technically late for class – yet – but late enough to cut things out of her schedule that she’d wanted to get done before heading to the second Coordination lecture. No big deal, she supposed. She could do her second Pokemon search later, and she didn’t really need to research condition and appeal before class, even if it would make things a bit easier to understand. She’d figure it all out later.

When she entered the room, she dipped her head to the teacher and the familiar shiny Pokemon from last time, taking the papers she was offered. Then her gaze fell on the other students. She vaguely recognized a Bolt Dorm student, and of course she knew Lilith. The other two were a mystery, even though one seemed to be from her own dorm. Were they newly-enrolled, or just new to class? Or had she simply not remembered them? Whatever the case, she bowed in greeting to each of the students – giving Lilith a small smile since she was the most familiar – and took a seat at the end of the row near the middle. She then released Quartz from her pokeball and fed the Seel a couple treats from her bag while waiting on class to begin. Perhaps her choice of Pokemon was a bit too big to be in class, but she’d fallen behind on the water-type’s training and wanted to make it up to her.

As the students walked into the room, Celeste greeted them in turn, offering curt nods of acknowledgment while going as far as to smile faintly at the first student to enter — Finley, she noticed another student call them — due to their starstruck reaction. "Alaire is a little special," Celeste told her, said Pokémon snorted a bit, shuffling in his sleep. "A certain gene in his DNA led to his special coloration. The rest of my team, here, share that trait too. For some, like Elaine, it's not that obvious. But, Damien and Alaire stand out quite a bit."

Pseudo-lecture done, Celeste waited for everyone to settle down in their seats. Yvain and Noelle had quieted down too, the large Milotic curled up defensively in a corner while Noelle pranced up to stand by Celeste's desk, her gorgeous tails fluttering to-and-fro as she trotted over. Celeste spared her a rebuking glance, which had no real bite behind it, before beginning with the lecture. Flipping to the next slide, Celeste faced the students while talking; she didn't need to read off the projector, having already memorized what she was going to say.

"So, as the title slide stated, today's class is going to be about working basic strategies into your contest routines. Now, as I mentioned before in the last class, various moves each have their own effects. Some may change the order in which the contestants take turns to appeal to the judges, and others may make the judge favor your Pokémon just a little bit more. By putting them all together, you can create a strategy in response to the situation. So, with all that being said, can anyone explain why the proper execution of such techniques would be useful? Also, why would simply thinking up a very rigid set of moves beforehand not be a sure method of achieving victory?"

[Finley Morrow]

When a familiar face came through the door, Finley felt immediately better. “Hey, Lilith!” Finley returned cheerfully. She would’ve gone on to make small talk and pleasantries, fill the air just a little bit, but class was already beginning.

She even got a response to her off-hand remark. A unique gene can lead to a different coloration? Finley was sure she’d heard this in passing, seen a few other pokemon with unusual fur or feathers. To hear it directly in a class certified that knowledge. She also made note that Miss Bonnaire seemed to like such pokemon - paying closer attention, Finley realized she had several.

Next came the question posed to the class. Finley waited for a moment to see if anyone had any immediate answers to throw out. After two beats of silence, she figured if she gave hers now, she wouldn’t be interrupting anyone.

She gave an easy solution, one her coordinator mother had done many, many times. “First, you can use a move that makes your pokemon go first in the next turn, and follow it the next round with a move that works great if used first.” Finley paused for a moment, trying to think of a specific example. One of her mother’s favorite pokemon, a togekiss, had used this combo. “Like, if you used extreme speed and then aura sphere.” She finished, actually managing to recall the names of the moves.

She’d only answered one part of the question, but she’d leave that to others. For now, Finley settled back in her seat.

Mallory listened in silence to the teacher as first she explained about the shininess of her Pokémon, then questioned them about strategy. One of her classmates already seemed to have the answer to the first question, but hadn't answered the second. Mallory didn't have a clue what the answer would be and, sticking to her quiet girl act, chose not to try and have a guess.

Instead, she thought through what the other student had said. So some moves did better if used first, while others changed the order you went in? She would have to remember that. It seemed coordinating was a lot harder- and perhaps more interesting- than she had first thought. It didn't seem like attending this class was such a bad idea after all.

Class began, and she got her notebook ready. For now, the teacher seemed to be summarizing a point from last class, so she refrained from taking notes for now. She did keep her eyes on the slides, though, one hand absently petting her Seel while she listened and tried to understand.

The teacher posed a question to the class, and one of her classmates responded with part of the answer. She wrote the answer down. It seemed like an important point. As for the rest of the question…she wished she had an answer. For her, this class was the hardest, or at least the most confusing.

To be honest Violette had no idea what the teacher was talking about. Not the shiny business, she knew a lot of shiny pokemon. She had seen tons of them when she used to go with her mom to work. Well in a pokemon battle if you had a set up a rather rigid move set then it is something that people would know that would happen? They expect it and in contests you'd want them to be unable to predict your moves so that's why it would be bad right? Before Violette could answer someone already had. Violette decided to keep to herself instead and just take notes for the time being. Velvet was being quiet and keeping still for once.

Recognizing that the rest of the students were unlikely to speak up, Celeste decided to jump back into her lecture. "That's correct," she said, nodding at Finley. "By building a strong move set, you can more easily appeal to the judges and win their attention. However, you should be wary of having a very rigid set of moves because a contest includes several other coordinators, all of which also have the chance to use their Pokémons' moves to alter the flow of the competition as well."

"Since this class is meant for beginners," Celeste said, flipping to the next slide. "I won't assume that all of you know the effects of various Pokémon moves. So, I prepared a handout for you, the one you all received from Damien walking in, that has some common moves and their effects. Scan it over really quickly, and let me know if you have any problems. If there aren't any, I'd like for you all to place the moves shown on the overhead in the best order. Assuming, of course, that no one else is interfering with it."

Glancing back at the whiteboard, Celeste could make out the four moves: Tackle, Growl, Charge Beam, and Quick Attack. All of the moves and their effects could be found in the handout, and Celeste was sure that her students were smart enough to figure the problem out. And, if they needed help, she was more that willing, so long as they spoke up and asked. But, before she let them work, she decided to make a little disclaimer. "Remember that there may not always be one right answer. Even with the most straightforward moves, there are always several ways of looking at it. Now, if you don't have any issues with the materials discussed earlier, feel free to get started. You're welcome to work together if you wish, as long as you remain on task."

The lecture continued, and she noted the correct answer, as well as advice against using a rigid move set. Then her attention was directed to the handout, and she looked it over, her gaze turning to the overhead when it was mentioned. It seemed they had an assignment they needed to work on, and she tried not to let her dread show on her face. She had no idea what she was doing in this class! How was she supposed to know the right answer to this?! The teacher said there may not be one right answer, but that did little to calm her nerves.

But then she studied the handout again, and she noticed that some of the moves had notes about turn order. Maybe this wouldn’t be so hard, then… She wrote the moves and their notes down in her notebook, drawing a thick line to the right of the list so she could rewrite the list in the proper order on the right side.

Once that was done, she looked around, hoping to catch a classmate’s eye and maybe ask about comparing notes. They were allowed to work together, after all, and she’d feel more comfortable about her answer if she knew that someone else agreed or at least had something vaguely similar figured out.
