It was a pleasant day and, wanting to make the most of the sun, Rosemary had decided to go for a swim. So she had left a note on her door to inform anyone looking for her she was on the beach and gone down to the nearby shore for a dip.

Being in a somewhat good mood, she was letting some of her Pokémon swim, too. Spheal, Lapras, Seadra and Sharpedo were all enjoying the ocean with her, though none were getting too close to each other or Rosemary. From time to time Spheal would shoot by, but that was the nearest any of them got. None of them wanted to be near each other- they weren't friendly Pokémon. That suited Rosemary just fine. She didn't want cuddly, friendly Pokémon. She wanted Pokémon that would obey her without question, that would fight on her orders no matter what the cost, or the reason.

The unfriendliness occasionally led to trouble between them. But it was nothing that couldn't be solved with hard work, plenty of training and some time spent isolated in their PokeBalls if they got too carried away. And if all else failed, she would simply have one of her more well-behaved Pokémon teach the offender a lesson.

She pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind. None of them mattered right now- her Pokémon were behaving and she was enjoying the peace of the calm ocean waters. All that was needed now to make the day perfect was a good old battle.

A deep sigh escaped from Lilith's mouth as she entered the Wave Dorm. She had been debating on if she wanted to challenge one of the Wave Wardens for a badge or not. She had grown a lot stronger since the time she had first arrived on the island. She had earned quite a few breeding emblems and had managed to capture a huge array of Pokemon. She had even trained a lot of her Pokemon and involved quite a few of them. She felt that she was strong enough to challenge a Warden, but at the same time she was starting to get cold feet. Luckily after giving herself a quick pep talk she started to feel a little bit better about challenging the Warden. 

She approached the female Wave Wardens dorm, only to find a note attached to her dorm. Apparently, she had wondered off to the beach for a swim. Instead of turning ahead and heading back to the Mana Dorm, Lilith decided to make her way down to the beach. She had managed to build up enough courage to challenge the Warden, she wasn't going to turn around empty handed now. Thankfully, the beach wasn't nowhere away from the dorm itself. 

It didn't take Lilith to long to friend the female Warden and her Pokemon enjoying the cool water and warm sun. She slowly approached the group, clearing her throat as she prepared to greet Rosemary. "Hello Ms. Rosemary. My name is Lilith Sinclaire and I'm a Mana Dorm student at the academy. I would like to challenge you to a gym battle if that's okay." She spoke in a calm and confident tone. A small smile curved against her lips as she awaited the Warden's answer.

It appeared Rosemary's day was just about to turn perfect, as a student appeared on the beach and called her name. Rosemary swam to the shore as Lilith introduced herself and declared her intentions.

"Of course it's okay," she assured the student as she left the water, a smile crossing her face. It was good to hear confidence in a challenger's tone- that told her the student was ready, and the battle would, with any luck, be a real challenge to her.

But first, she had a minor problem to deal with. She had noticed Lapras watching Lilith warily, looking alert and prepared to attack. The Warden quickly called all of her Pokémon except for Spheal back into their pokeballs. Fortunately she had Wooper and Zubat's pokeballs with her as well, attached to an armband on her right arm, so she simply set aside her other Pokémon for the time being.

"This will be a three versus three battle, with me using my lowest tier team," she informed Lilith, though she was certain the Mana dorm student would already know as much. "There will be no items. I will start with Spheal, and you may make the first move once you have selected your Pokémon. Would you rather we battle out here, or indoors?"

Either way, it made no difference to Rosemary. If Lilith wanted to head indoors, there was a battlefield there just waiting for challengers to battle on it. If she wanted to just get on with the battle, well there was plenty space, and Rosemary saw no problem with it.

A sigh of relief sounded off against Lilith's lips after hearing Ms. Rosemary accept her challenge. She was pleased to know that the Wave Warden was more than willing to accept her challenge. "Thank you Ms. Rosemary." She smiled again before turning her attention towards the older female's Pokemon. She definitely owned a collect of rare Pokemon. She also noticed that some of Ms. Rosemary's Pokemon didn't seem to be too welcoming at the moment. Perhaps, it was simply because the did not know her too well. 

After Ms. Rosemary returned some of her Pokemon back into their Poke Balls and explained the battle rules to her, Lilith nodded her head. She was quite familiar with the rules, but it was still good to have Ms. Rosemary go over them for her. "I'm okay with battling out here." She smiled before walking over towards her side of the battlefield. She took a few seconds to analyze Ms. Rosemary's first Pokemon. It was a Spheal. A Water and Ice-type Pokemon. It shouldn't be too hard to take down. Especially with the help of her tough Pancham. "Donovan, I choose you!" She called out, taking one of her own Poke Ball and tossing it into the air. Within seconds a summersaulting Pancham emerged from the orb. "I'm going to be using my Pancham." She stated as if it wasn't obvious at the moment.

"Okay Donovan, this is our first Gym challenge, so let's try our best to leave with a victory!" She spoke other Pokemon. Donovan nodded his head and gave his trainer a thumbs up before turning his attention towards the Spheal. Donovan stared at his opponent with his meanest and toughest face that he could pull off. "Drain Punch!" She commanded, calling our her first attack. Hopefully, it would be a one hit knock out. Donovan nodded his head before rushing towards the Spheal with a glowing emerald-green fist, hoping to strike the Spheal with full force.

Rosemary was unsurprised to hear Lilith was fine with where they were. If it had been her first battle, she would have been eager to get on with it as well. But such thoughts brought back painful memories so, not being one to dwell on the past- certainly not in the middle of a battle- Rosemary pushed those thoughts away and focused on what Lilith's first Pokémon would be.

Pancham. It was not surprising to see a Fighting-type here- it was certainly a weakness of Spheal's. Seeing Lilith encourage her Pokémon made Rosemary smile very slightly, almost in a condescending manner. She had once encouraged her Pokémon like that, too- a long time ago, before she had even come to the Academy. It meant nothing, though. Encouragement tended to soften the Pokémon- only harsh training strengthened them.

It was unsurprising to see that the little panda knew some decent moves, considering that Lilith was here for a gym challenge. In fact, they were more than decent. The single attack sent Spheal rolling back, and she did not attempt to rise again. It was not the Spheal's fault she was weak to Fighting-types, but Rosemary still felt a flash of anger that one of her Pokémon could be defeated in a single move. Spheal clearly needed more training to even be considered a decent Pokémon.

But she hid her emotions well as she called back the fainted Pokémon, with only a faint flicker of annoyance in her eyes as she nodded to Lilith. "You have a good Pancham there," she commented. Had her dorm been one to use Fighting-types, she would have considered training one herself, to replace the Spheal. Perhaps she would look for one anyway, just as a personal Pokémon. Pushing the thought away- it was something she would have to think on later, after the battle- she sent out her next Pokémon. "Zubat. Wing Attack."

Without any hesitation, the energetic bat dived at the Pancham, aiming her wing at the panda's body.

As expected, Donovan's Drain Punch inflicted more than enough damage to the Spheal's body, knocking it out in one blow. "Amazing job, Donovan!" She praised her Pokemon while giving him a small smile. The Pancham gave his owner a fist pump before returning his attention back onto the battlefield, awaiting his next opponent to make its appearance. "Thanks Ms. Rosemary, this Pancham is one of the first Pokemon that captured during my arrival at the academy. We've been undergoing a lot of training together." She explained as she also awaited their next opponent. A few seconds passed and Ms. Rosemary had released her second Pokemon. It was Zubat. The Zubat was part Poison and Flying, which meant that it could prove to be a challenging opponent for a fighting-type like Donovan. Luckily, Donovan knew a couple of attacks that would deal a huge amount of damage to flying-types, too.

Ms. Rosemary didn't waste anytime ordering her Zubat to attack Donovan with a super effective attack. "Here it comes Donovan, hold your ground!" She commanded her Pokemon. She knew that her Pancham wouldn't be able to dodge the attack due to Zubat's superior speed. Therefore, she just had to hope that Donovan would be able to at Wing Attack and still have some energy left to battle. Donovan held his ground and endured the super effective attack. The attack only pushed him back just a bit. Luckily, the attack didn't inflict as much damage as Lilith was thinking that it would do. "And thats how you stand your ground. Good work Donovan! Now, it's our turn to attack again, use Thunder Punch!

Donovan nodded his head before rushing towards the Zubat, his powerful fist coated in gorgeous golden electricity. The Pancham kept his keen eyes locked on his target the entire time, hoping to give his opponent one heck of a shock that would also take it out in one hit.

It was not surprising to hear the Pancham was one of Lilith's first Pokémon caught, and Rosemary's thoughts once again flitted unbidden to the past. The first Pokémon she had caught for herself had been a Nidoran. Or had it been Bulbasaur? Now that she thought about it, Rosemary could neither remember, nor bring herself to care. The chances were it had been some weak Pokémon long ago abandoned and forgotten.

"Please, just call me Rosemary. Ms. makes me feel so old." Rosemary gave a brief smile. After all, she was only twenty three. It wasn't really that long ago that she had been in Lilith's shoes, facing a gym warden for the first time.

But her smile quickly vanished at the Pancham's next attack- another super effective hit. Like Spheal before her, Zubat simply couldn't withstand it, and fell, sparking with electricity. This time Rosemary barely tried to disguise her anger as she called the Zubat back.

"Well at least you got an attack in, even if it was a feeble one," she muttered. "Which is better than Spheal."

It didn't take a genius to figure out what her next Pokémon would be. She hardly had a choice, now she had been brought down to one. She sent out her Wooper, and as with Zubat she didn't hesitate in ordering him about. "Wooper. Muddy Water. And don't miss."

The Wooper narrowed his eyes and appeared to aim carefully before attacking with a wave of brown water, clearly taking Rosemary's words to heart.

Another pleased smile soon curved against Lilith's mouth as she watched Rosemary's Zubat fall down in defeat. The battle itself was currently going a lot better than she imagined that it would be. She definitely felt good about starting the battle off with Donovan now. She smiled at her Pancham and gave him a thumbs up. Donovan grinned and performed against fist pump. The little Pancham was one of Lilith's strongest Pokemon, despite his adorable appearance and small body frame. His battle styles worked pretty will with his diverse move pool and unique ability. 

Lilith nodded her head at Rosemary, after hearing the older female give her permission to address her without having to use any honorifics. She watched as Rosemary returned her Zubat and withdraw another Poke Ball in order to release her final Pokemon. She debated swapping out from another Pokemon, but soon made a decision to keep her Pancham in. It had managed to take out her other two Pokemon without any trouble. Besides, she didn't want to switch out Pancham and replace it with another Pokemon, because it would allow Rosemary's Pokemon to get another hit in. 

Lilith smiled as she noticed Rosemary's final Pokemon enter the battlefield. It was a Wooper, a Water/Ground-type Pokemon. Her Snivy would have had an easy time taking out this little guy. However, she was confident that Donovan would be able to get the job done, too. "Stand your ground again, then attack with Drain Punch!" She ordered out loud. There was no way to dodge the oncoming wave of dark water. Therefore, Donovan didn't have a choice, but to take on the wave head on. Luckily, the attack didn't inflict too much damage to the Pacham's body. Now, Donovan aimed his mighty fist at the Wooper, hoping to inflict damage as well as steal some of his health. Lilith knew that Rosemary's final Pokemon wouldn't be taken out too easily unlike her other two.

Loss was a certainty. Rosemary knew that now, and that knowledge angered her. She was supposed to be a challenge- her entire team was not meant to be defeated by a single Pokémon, and certainly not one that hadn't even evolved yet.

But she pushed her anger away. Wooper had landed a hit, even if it wasn't a substantial one, and now it was the Pancham's turn to attack. The move was the very same one that had taken down Spheal so easily, and Rosemary narrowed her eyes, just daring her Wooper to collapse from the attack.

Fortunately for Wooper, he managed to withstand the blow, though it was clear from his stagger as the attack struck that he most likely would not be able to take another attack of that strength. Still, at least he hadn't been knocked out in one hit like her other Pokémon.

"Muddy Water again." Rosemary showed no concern for her Pokémon, and her voice was cold as she gave the order. Wooper took a deep breath and steadied himself before attacking, as though already knowing the beating that would no doubt be coming next from the Pancham.

Once Donovan's powerful first made contact with the Wooper's body, Donovan quickly started to drain a little bit of of the Wooper's health in order to restore some of his own hit points. A warm smile curved against Lilith's mouth as she watched her Pokemon deal a decent amount of damage onto his opponent as well as restoring some of his own health. 

Lilith glanced away from the dueling Pokemon for just a bit. She wanted to take a look over at Rosemary. As she expected, the older female didn't seem to be too pleased with how the battle was turning out in Lilith's favorite. The young Mana student definitely thought that Rosemary would have been a lot more challenging since she was somewhat a of a Gym Leader. Perhaps, she just came a little too overly prepared for the battle. Either way, it was quite obvious that she would be walking away with a badge right now. 

"Donovan, I believe that it is time to finish this battle. Let's use Drain Punch one more time!" She commanded with a half smile. Donovan gave his trainer a thumbs up before rushing towards the Wooper with another powerful punch with the hopes of knocking down Wooper out for good this time.

Rosemary narrowed her eyes in disappointment as, while Wooper's attack hit, it failed to have the desired effect of lowering the Pancham's accuracy. Unsurprisingly, Lilith was quick to order her Pancham to finish the match.

Her Wooper took the blow soundlessly. He had never been one to make noise when hurt, not even when she had first caught him- it was part of what had made her decide to keep him in the first place, a choice she was beginning to regret. She called him back and scowled at the PokeBalls of all three of her fallen Pokémon. "We're going to have to do some serious training," she muttered. Her Pokémon had to learn to take a hit, even a super effective one. Otherwise they were all but useless to her.

But first, there were formalities to finish off. She looked at Lilith, her scowl vanishing and replaced with a nod of respect to the student and her Pokémon. "Congratulations. Your Pancham is an impressive Pokémon," she commented, reaching to a tiny, waterproof bag strapped to her left arm. Rosemary never went anywhere without a few badges (among other things), just in case she was challenged and defeated, and it seemed that had been for good reason.

She pulled out the badge and held it out to Lilith. "Here is your Wave Badge. If you ever want a rematch with my stronger, more resilient Pokémon," and here she cast a brief glare at her third tier's PokeBalls, making it very clear just what she currently thought of them, "feel free to ask at any time. Of course, you wouldn't be able to earn a badge until you have won against three other dorms, but it might be good experience for you, if you need it."
