Although Nibble was beginning to embarrass him already, the professor rolled with it. With a warning, his Pokémon floated a rawhide bone over and poked Nibble. She turned away from the desks and glared at the bone. "Gible..." She jumped and chomped down on the bone. Hopefully, she'd be distracted for the rest of the class.

With a sigh, Charles returns his attention back to Mr. Christopher. He was explaining about his past and how they used to figure out typing. It all made quite a bit of sense. When the professor passed out the cards, Charles hung his head. Here came the hard part: identification. When they were told that they were matching Moves to the Pokémon, his head hung lower. Luckily, his Pokémon's type was fairly easy. He wasn't sure which Pokémon it was, but it definitely looked like a Grass-type. But none of the moves really stood out as being Grass-type.

"Okay, so I have a... Grass-type, I believe. He kinda looks like a lilypad, too. So maybe Water-type as well? Gah!" He continues thinking for a bit. "Got it! Okay, so between the twelves moves... Uh... Giga Drain is Grass-type. I think. And Water Pulse is definitely Water-type. And I think... Scald is a Water-type move as well...? I've never heard of anything else being scalding..."

He was a little pleased with himself. He had no idea what the attacks looked like, but their names alone made it fairly easy to identify the types. He flips one of the sheets over that Mr. Christopher had given them. On it, he made notes about the probable types of the other Pokémon and the Moves.

Noting that none of the other cards were Grass-type, he went ahead and stacked it underneath his own card, leaving eleven moves to choose from. Well, Charles really only had two more, but one of them went to another.

He looks over at Nibble to make sure she was still chewing on the rawhide. Surprisingly, she was behaving. Although the bone was half gone already... Charles sighs. Looks like she'll have to go back in her Pokéball soon...

[Shane Norwood]

What was with all the cards? Shane wasn't sure, but he figured that they had to be of use somehow. Apparently each of the cards contained a specific species of pokemon, and the task at hand was designate two moves to the given pokemon. The one in which the Bolt kid had received was of a peculiar species of among those that he had not yet encountered on the fields. "Nosepass, huh? Haven't seen this one before...looks a bit bulky though..." the aspiring trainer thought aloud.

While the pokedex was an available option, Shane chose not to refer to it now. He felt that he needed to try doing this on his own, otherwise he probably won't learn much of anything at all. He would instead refer to the material that Mr. Christopher had provided. "So...by looking at this, I'm willing to bet that it's a rock-type. I'm thinking it could definitely be able to use Power Gem at least."

That'd a be good sign. He has seen his Carbink use that several times already. "As for the second move...Rock Smash? Sounds like something rock-based...yeah!" He hadn't seen any pokemon use that fighting-type move in actuality before though. It sounded 'rocky' enough...?

"Right, I'll go with those two."

[Samuel Brookes]

Samuel's heart sank the moment he saw the card he had been given. What was it? Nothing he had seen before, that was certain. Looked to him like it could be Dark type or something. But seeing as he had permission to use his Pokedex, he was going to take full advantage of that and check to make certain. When in doubt, get the Pokedex out- that was his method.

Snorunt, the Snow Hat Pokémon, the Pokedex proclaimed it to be. Well, there went Samuels assumption. It was obviously an Ice type. With that in mind, he glanced at the move cards.

"According to my Pokedex, this one's an Ice type, so I guess it'd have Icy Wind?" he suggested. "And... um..." He paused, biting his lip. There weren't any other moves there he recognised as Ice type ones. He looked to his classmates, hoping they would have better knowledge than him on this particular Pokémon. Hunter, meanwhile, was still laid next to him, seemingly relaxed- but his eyes were narrowed and watching the Gible intently.

[Finley Morrow]

Finley chuckled to himself. What luck; he actually knew about the pokemon on his card. His coordinator mother focused on raising flying type pokemon, and as is so happened, Natu was a flying type. A flying psychic duel type, to be specific. While Finley wasn’t especially familiar with natu themselves, he’d known a zatu, their evolution, decently well. From that he could make inferences.

“Natu’s a flying and psychic type,” Finley said confidently, “so I’m going to write down psyshock for me.” He couldn’t call to mind exactly what the move did, but the “psy” at the beginning was a pretty clear indicator as to the type of the move. One down, one more to go. Next, he scanned the list for a flying type move. None of them stood out to him as certainly that type - perhaps icy wind? It did have “wind” in the name. One of the other bold dorm students had already suggested that for his ice type pokemon (fact checked by the pokedex), and that made more sense.

No point in lingering if he didn’t know. Resolving to come back to that later, Finley took out a piece of paper for himself and copied down the list of moves, crossing off the ones people had already claimed.

The list was narrowed, but it was still far from short. “Perhaps we should think about which moves our pokemon couldn’t learn?” He suggested. “I don’t think Natu could learn hammer arm, because no arms. Same for thunder punch.” That left five moves. Finley scratched his head with his pencil eraser. “I don’t think the water moves are very likely either - and I think you’re right on scald being a water-type move. I’m not seeing the connection between water and this little green bird.” He guessed Zatu sort of looked forestry, and forests got lots of rain, but that was a stretch. “That leaves discharge, thunderbolt, and shadow ball for me.” He mused.

Class officially began, and the teacher started talking about his Pokemon journey. She readied a notebook, jotting down the occasional note about the origin of attacks but otherwise merely listening. A lot of it seemed to be common sense, or story for story’s sake, so she wasn’t sure if she needed to memorize everything.

Then it was time for a class activity. She watched as the cards were retrieved and shuffled psychically and then glanced down at the card she’d been given. Machop? She knew practically nothing about that Pokemon, but the teacher gave them permission to use their dexes, so she pulled out her pokedex and started studying while her fellow students set to work choosing their attacks. She caught snippets of conversation – debating on Lotad’s type and commenting on Nosepass. Both of these were Pokemon she had a very basic understanding of, being from her home region and all, but no one seemed to be asking any actual questions about them, so she left it alone and continued looking things over.

Then one of the Bolt students seemed to be struggling. She glanced at him, and then at his card, frowning. “I-I think most Ice types learn a few water moves, as well…”

Then one of the other students made a list of moves assigned to the Pokemon on their cards. She listened as he spoke. Her fighting type had…quite a few of these knocked off right off the bat. The two remaining moves that made the most sense were Thunder Punch and Hammer Arm, but what if those were meant for other Pokemon? Should she take them anyway, or just wait for the older, more experienced students to take all their cards and grab what was left? She really didn’t want to cause a scene if she took someone else’s moves…

I guess I’ll just wait for everyone else to get theirs and pick what’s left… They probably knew more than she did anyway, at this point.

Satisfied with his notes thus far, he shows them to the others and grabs his other card. "This is what I've worked out so far. The problem is that the boulder with a nose is one move short. Meaning that one of the Mana girls has his other move. I'm not saying that these are right, but they're what make sense." He paused a bit before finishing up. "Anyone have any ideas?"

[Lilith Sinclaire]

Lilith picked up the papers resting on her desk and carefully read over them for a couple of minutes. It wasn't long before her deep azure eyes shifted towards a small Dragon/Flying type Pokemon perching on her desk. A soft giggled escaped from Lilith's mouth as she greeted the familiar Pokemon. "Hi Fluorite." She smiled at her roommate's Pokemon. Lilith always found Fluorite to be a cute and adorable Pokemon. She even thought about catching a Noibat for herself. She soon turned her attention towards her roommate, giving her a soft smile to assure Toni that she didn't mind Fluorite hanging out with her. It wasn't long before one of her own Pokemon emerged from her Poke Ball. "Oh, I forgot to let you out. Sorry, Donovan." She giggled glancing down at her Pancham. The Pancham nodded his head before leaping onto the edge of his trainer's desk. 

Lilith's attention soon switched away from the Pokemon and focused towards Mr. Christopher. It appeared that her professor was finally about to start his lecture. She jolted down a few notes and nodded her head a couple of times at his words as she listened to his lecture. A few minutes passed and Mr. Christopher started explaining a class activity. It was an odd activity, but sounded rather interesting at the same time. Her eyes widen as the Elekid card floated towards her. She slowly reached out to grab the card and allowed her keen eyes to observe it for a few seconds. "Elekid, huh?" She hummed to herself. She was quite familiar with the Pokemon, since it was a native to her home region. 

She started thinking deeply before coming up with the answer. There were currently three different types of electoral moves. However, one of those moves could be learned by another Pokemon. A rock Pokemon to be more exact. Thunder Punch was a signature move for Elekid and Eletrabuzz. Elekid could learn Thunderbolt naturally. Therefore, she decided to go with those two moves.

[Finley Morrow]

Finley looked at the Lava dorm student’s notes. He’d written down “shadow ball” under b/l (bolt late), who couldn’t’ve been anyone other than him. He’d been edging towards that as his final move. Since another person seemed to agree, Finley was feeling pretty confident that was the correct answer. Psyshock and shadow ball for natu it was.

With the help of one of the mana dorm girls (he gave a mental thanks to her for knowing that hard one), it was down to just the nosepass and machop. They were each pretty much certain to know power gem and hammer arm respectively, each fitting that pokemon the best. That left discharge and rock smash to divide between them. “Isn’t rock smash an HM? One of those moves that lots of different pokemon can learn through a disk?” Finley realized. That one may be best left to assign last.

Time to whip out the pokedex. First nosepass: “Its magnetic nose always faces north and draws iron objects to its body to protect itself better.” The little device said, followed by “It hefts a Graveler repeatedly to strengthen its entire body. It uses every type of martial arts” for machop. That last one wasn’t too helpful, but the first one may have solved the puzzle.

“Nosepass’s dex entry says the pokemon’s magnetic, and therefore probably has something to do with electricity. I highly doubt machop can learn discharge. That leaves rock smash for machop. Anyone disagree?” Finley sat back in his chair, feeling like he’d just solved a mystery case.

[Karl Christopher]

Karl hummed as he looked over the puzzle his students were working on and saw Charles notes and looked them over "hmm... not bad, Mr. Xaquiry your notes do provide at least half of the proper solution. However you all might want to double check Machop's moves, I'm pretty sure hammer Arm isn't among them. In fact I'm more then sure which is kinda surprising given that both are fighting type but it's only one of two with actual arms here but if the other one already has thunderpunch and thunderbolt then there's no space... hmm... puzzling, puzzling, puzzling.

That's exactly what he was trying to avoid: using his pokedex. Having to refer to it, to him, felt like he would be cheating on an exam or something - in spite of the fact that this particular test was more of the 'open book' variety. Hearing the entry on the 'boulder with a nose' inevitably caused the boy to second-guess his, er, guess. To say that his pride in this particular subject was badly damaged just now would be a major understatement.

Despite that, there was no legitimate reason for Shane to disagree with what the pokedex had to say about the Nosepass. Perhaps depending on the description, it probably was capable of learning some kind of electrical maneuver. But did the kid who mentioned this have to sound like such a smart allec about it though? No...or so the aspiring trainer thought...

"I guess the pokedex never lies...so perhaps Nosepass could very well be capable of using Discharge after all..." Then again, Elekid was capable of learning this technique naturally as well. But each move could only be used once...

Needless to say, the boy was at an impasse.

[Samuel Brookes]

Samuel was starting to feel a little guilty. All the others were helping out, pitching in and had even figured out the second move for his card- which he had had no idea about, having never owned any Ice type or paid attention to those he had seen- but so far he'd done nothing to help them.

And it seemed he would continue to do nothing, because he knew nothing about any of the Pokémon they had been given. Despite coming from a large family, all of whom were trainers and had specialised in different types, not one of Samuel's relatives had ever trained such Pokémon. Or if they had, Samuel hadn't paid attention to them.

Still, he felt an urge to at least try and contribute, so he spoke up anyway. "If Machop can't learn Hammer Arm, then that means it must go Elekid, right?" But then Elekid would have three moves and, even if everyone else agreed on Machop having Rock Smash, it would still only have the one. And Samuel couldn't see any moves that logically made sense for Machop to have.

Samuel scowled slightly. This was why he hated class. It also happened to be pretty much the exact reason he had decided to attend in the first place.

[Lilith Sinclaire]

A slight frown spread against Lilith's face as she started to listen to her classmate discuss the different moves with each other. She was confident that her answer would be correct. However, another one of her the teacher pointed out that Hammer Arm wasn't one of Machop's moves. It had arms and it was a a fighting-type. She didn't quite understand why Machop couldn't learn the move. Still, she didn't argue with Mr. Christopher's hint. She bit down on her bottom lip for a few seconds and started thinking even harder about the different moves that each Pokemon could learn naturally, through breeding or TM/HMs. A few seconds passed and a lightbulb went off in her head. 

Lilith glanced back at Samuel and nodded her head at his comment. "It is possible that Elekid can learn Hammer Arm through breeding. I can't believe that I actually overlooked that one. Machop can learn Thunder Punch through breeding, too. Perhaps. Elekid moves are Thunderbolt and Hammer Arm." She stated with a small smile curved against her lips.

Fluorite squeaked in reply to Lilith’s greeting and seemed perfectly happy to remain there, but then Lilith’s Pancham leaped onto the desk and startled her. The batlike Pokemon flew back to her trainer, who gave her a quick ear scratch and made room for her on her own desk.

The Lava student had written some notes that he shared with everyone. She looked at them, but didn’t really understand the shorthand he used. Everyone started talking around her, working on solving things. Toni had a hard time bringing herself to speak and hated to interrupt, so she kept quiet and listened. The teacher came over to offer a hint, and she frowned in thought. There went that idea, then…why was Machop so hard to figure out? This was supposed to be her talent!

Then Lilith and one of the bolt dorm boys seemed to figure out her moves for her. Rock Smash made sense, but Thunder Punch? They were both older and probably smarter than her, so she’d take their word on that. The electric move was a punch, so maybe it even made sense. She nodded in thanks to the others and reached out to grab the cards in question. It seemed they all had everything figured out now…unless she was missing something, anyway. It was hard to keep track of so many people, anymore.

It seemed he hadn’t been entirely right in his assumption that machop would learn hammer arm. He guessed that made sense, considering the oddness of some species’ movesets. When his togepi evolved into a togetic, who could with his little tiny arms that couldn’t reach past his head, learn punching moves.

Pretty sure that the answers the lava dorm student read off were correct, Finely nodded in agreeance and was left with nothing else to offer. He looked expectantly to the teacher.

Finley realized he was the only person left who hadn’t let out a pokemon. Neither of his two were particularly sociable - Brian would just go stare out the window and Diem would only leave his lap to go break something - so for now he elected to leave them both in their pokeballs.
