Name: Rien Eyre
Age: 25
Date of Birth: August 19th
Birthplace: Vermilion City, Kanto
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Face Claim: Laxus Dreyar - Fairy Tail
Appearance:
Distinguishing Features: I’d be difficult to mistake Rien for anyone else. His large frame is accented with large muscles, his face with thick eyebrows, spiky blond hair, and a large scar down his right eye. Rien has a loud, deep voice, a heavy step, and an air of pride about him. His wardrobe is plain, full of mostly various takes on jeans pants and variously colored and patterned large collared shirts, some of which are less... fashionably acceptable than others. His large, fur-trimmed coat is mostly just for contests, but he’ll also wear it when he wants to look just that much larger.
Height: 6ft 1in
Character Type: Bolt Warden - Tough Director
Personality:
Rien believes that it is strength that rules this world; strength in arguments, charisma, and in battle, to name a few. Those in charge are those who are strong, and those who are not get left behind and ignored. This, to him, is far from a perfect world, but he believes to win the game, you must play it. Especially when the cost of loosing is to be forgotten, left to small jobs to nowhere or to be picked up by nefarious teams promising false power. As a mentor, he believes it’s his job to help students discover and reach their full power, even if it means becoming somewhat adversarial himself. Nothing drives people forward faster than an enemy to defeat.
Rien is a stubborn man with strong ideals and a booming voice with which he can shove them down other people’s throats. He does not waver, he does not compromise, and if something stands in his way, he punches it (usually metaphorically with a pokemon battle if that thing is a living being). Rien solves his problems with force.
In the heat of things Rien may be steadfast in his ideals, but over a cup of tea, Rien enjoys discussing the merits of his morals. He knows his simplified worldview can’t fully capture the complexities of his society, and is interested in hearing what others have come up with (granted, he’ll be far more likely to stick with his views than change). At the heart of his search is truth, and if he finds it, he’s not going to pretend he hasn’t.
Rien is prideful. He takes his job seriously and with great dignity, and if anyone makes fun of the fact he’s a coordinator, he will challenge them on the spot. If someone insults him, he’ll challenge them. He’ll happily boast loudly about himself, and will assume he’s stronger than you until proven otherwise. If a student defeats him, he will be proud of them and happy to have helped them on their journey. If someone else defeats him, he’ll begrudgingly accept it (thinking “I would still win at a contest or at the very least an arm wrestle”). If someone he really wants to win against, be them the smug type or another kind of person who grates his nerves, beats him, he will sulk. Later, revenge fueling his actions, he will seek out a rematch.
While Rien can be reckless, he’s not so prideful that he’ll put others, his pokemon, and himself at risk. If a situation gets that far, he lets whatever matter got them there in the first place drop and do whatever he needs to do to get everyone out safely. He’s been burned badly in the past for not knowing when to quit and for disregarding wellbeing for pride, and has promised to never do the same again.
He also believes that: everyone has potential if they work to reach it; luck isn’t a thing; power comes in many different forms and one form alone won’t get you very far; just because you can do something, including reaching a higher level of power, does not automatically mean you should; one should never take for granted the strength they have; all forms of strength are to be respected and not one is innately better than any other (save for manipulation and backstabbing; that’s cowardice).
Other: Rien is quick to anger. All it’ll take is one well-placed snide comment and flames will be coming out of his ears (as such, he can be fun to tease). In his down time, Rien enjoys the simple things in life, like a good drink or meal or a tree in bloom in the spring. While Rien is normally very courageous, often the first to go into the unknown, he is quite scared of ghosts.
Rien will often say one of his pokemon trained another of his, which may seem odd to some trainers. Rien was fully involved in the raising of each member of his team, but he will quickly admit “they learn as much from each other as they do from me”.
Likes:

- Competitions of just about any kind
- Showing off
- To see a challenger beat him on a rematch, having grown.

Dislikes:
- Ghost type pokemon
- Salad
- Villainous teams
- Cowards (this includes manipulators and backstabbers in his book)
- Bounty hunters - Rien has gripes with all that would cause harm to others, but because of the time he’s spent with his pokemon ranger father and the direct effects he’s seen and felt from such people, Rien has a particular distaste for them.
- Trainers who don’t respect their pokemon
- Those who abuse their power
- Those who do nothing
- When he wants to dramatically rip off a piece of clothing but it snags
A Somewhat Brief and Blunt History because it's Long as is:
Rien’s single father is a pokemon ranger in Kanto who is very happy with his job, but his job kept him away from home most of the time. Rien was an attention seeker when he was young. Pulling pranks was a pastime for him, and while his father would publically have him apologize, many of Rien’s fond childhood memories with his father were of the dinner after the prank, when his father would congratulate him and suggest ways he could have done it better. Also the times when he father took him out on pokemon ranger adventures. On one such adventure they came across an orphaned cubone, and the nine-year-old Rien decided he’d raise the pokemon himself.
When he was ten he was sent to Grey Haven Academy so he could get a proper education and a social life. He was given a beldum and would join either the bolt or mana dorm, and since “there was no way in heck [he was] going to spend the next six years with a bunch of ghosts and creepy people”, he went to the bolt dorm.
Rien was a trainer for the first month-ish of his time at the Academy, and came close to getting a badge, but then he discovered coordination. Because hewas an attention seeker didn’t want to be like all the other trainers, he shifted gears to that.
And Rien was going to be the toughest coordinator out there. His pokemon (mostly his cubone at this time, because his beldum only knew takedown) were the toughest. He was the toughest. He got in trouble twice for punching the kid who called him “girly” or the like, and after that (and one more time he didn’t get caught for) people learned that other bully targets were less likely to knock out a tooth, and moved on.
Tora won Rien’s first ribbon and Ezaro won his second. After Woden evolved, they won Rien’s third, and an even tougher Tora won his fourth. While Rien had originally become a coordinator just because, it grew on him. He learned that moves and strength could be used for much more than just beating the other party into submission, and found the innate beauty in skills practiced over and over to perfection, tweaked and framed until they were stunning to behold. Rien opened up and became more mindful of himself, the world, and others as he aged, but in the process became a staunch idealist with an ego.
Rien kept in good contact with his father, and as he grew stronger, occasionally the ranger would ask him to help with one of missions that required powerful pokemon. One such request came a few weeks after Rien had obtained his fourth ribbon. A bounty hunter in Sinnoh had, at last, been apprehended. However, as a last means of revenge, she’d set free a number of her pokemon and left them to rampage. The rangers had their hands full with the pokemon wreaking havoc, and so his father asked him to come help.
The pokemon he was tasked with stopping was the bounty hunter’s strongest - her garchomp. They’d been tracking the dragon for a week, and he’d already clawed and blasted his way through half a forest and almost thirty wild pokemon. A night came where Rien was sent ahead alone to follow the pokemon while the rest of the team of six stayed behind to tend to a small forest village the garchomp had hit. He trailed the garchomp to a cave with no other exit - and reported that back to his father. He told Rien to wait, to not engage the pokemon alone.
Help would not be coming soon. If he waited, the swift garchomp would only cause more destruction and displace and injure - perhaps even kill - more pokemon and people. He trusted in his strength, and he was going to end this now.
The garchomp was a pokemon bread to be strong and trained for battle since the day he was born. After years under a corrupt trainer, and a sudden release from the only home he’d ever known, the pokemon had gone completely mad. Rien fought him with both his metang Woden and his marowak Tora, but the dragon didn’t fight like any other pokemon he’d ever faced before. After several minutes of intense combat, the garchomp prepared final gambit of a dragon rush - and launched himself at Rien.
Rien would have died that day had not Tora intercepted at the last moment. The garchomp left a gash down Rien’s eye, and a deep wound down the right side of the marowak. Woden finally knocked out the garchomp with a meteor mash from behind, but Rien hardly noticed. He was stunned, fixated on his fallen ally, still grappling with the fact that he’d nearly died. The noise of the battle had brought two of the rangers to come investigate, and they were the ones to recapture the garchomp and rush the marowak off to the pokemon center.
They saved Tora’s life, but she never made a full recovery. The attack had greatly injured the muscle in her right leg, and had stolen its strength and balance. Rien knew he could have avoided the situation entirely had only he held back his pride and listened to the advice of the experienced ranger. It took him a long time and a lot of self reflection for him to finally forgive himself. Even now, nothing stands firmer in his mind than the vow to never let such a thing happen again.
Beginning as early as the second year into his adventure, Rien’s father would occasionally pass along pokemon in need of a new home that the ranger had found. Rein would often train these pokemon for a while and then give them to new trainers, but a few he grew especially attached to and kept. Perhaps this was his father’s way of trying to teach the self-centered boy a bit of compassion (which worked). One such pokemon was a riolu, whom had been orphaned by another bounty hunter. Ennis, as she was named, was given to him about a month after the incident with the garchomp. While the weight of Rien’s major contest pokemon fell upon the shoulders of Woden, whom would go on to evolve into a metagross and win Rien's fifth ribbon, Tora began to train the quickly-learning young riolu.
After Rien graduated from the Academy, he traveled with his father for a year before ultimately getting homesick and returning to Harmonica Island. Ennis evolved and and has come into her position as Rien’s strongest pokemon, Tora had a child and has since been raising an heir, and Ezaro finally made friends. Rien spent another year on the island focused on raising his team before accepting his current job as a bolt dorm warden. He’s been crushing the hopes and dreams of new coordinators ever since.
Starter Pokemon:
Tier 1:
Name: Ennis
Species: Lucario
Gender: Female
Ability: Inner Focus
Item: Yellow Scarf
Moves: Close Combat | Extreme Speed | Counter | Bone Rush | Rock Slide | Final Gambit | Swift | Work Up | Force Palm | Aura Sphere
Contest Stats: Tough (10/10), Cool (10/10), Clever (10/10)
Notes: Ennis took up the mantle as Rien’s main tough pokemon after training under Tora. She’s since developed her own style, incorporating much more grace into her attacks than what the Marowak had. Ennis is calm, controlled, and introspective, and lacks the pride of her trainer. She sees herself as a single cog in a world of equilibrium, and her duty to use her strength to help maintain this balance.
Name: Woden
Species: Metagross
Gender: n/a
Ability: Clear Body
Item: Green Scarf
Moves: Magnet Rise | Miracle Eye | Bullet Punch | Zen Headbutt | Psychic | Rock Tomb | Telekinesis | Hammer Arm | Pursuit | Body Slam
Contest Stats: Clever (10/10), Tough (10/10), Cute (10/10)
Notes: Woden was given to Rien when he entered the school. While Rien’s largest pokemon, Woden is also his most gentle - preferring to participate in contests far over battles. They train for themself and for the art of the moves, not to prove oneself stronger than another. Woden will only participate in battles if something they care for is threatened. This hasn’t always been the case - when Rien was training Woden in his school years, the pokemon was fine with battle. Rien noticed this change in mindset beginning after the event that gave him his scar. They love nature and will spend as much time as possible pretending to be a statue among the plants and trees.
Name: Ezaro
Species: Jolteon
Gender: Male
Ability: Quick Feet
Item: Red Scarf
Moves: Thunder Shock | Agility | Pin Missile | Thunder Wave | Thunder | Roar | Hyper Beam | Shock Wave | Trump Card | Double-edge
Contest Stats: Cool (10/10), Tough (10/10), Beautiful (10/10)
Notes: Ezaro was Rien’s first addition to his prior team of two. The pokemon has such an ego and lack of self preservation that he’s been known to aggravate things many times his size, among other such dangerous stunts. Ezaro is an attack first, ask questions later sort of pokemon, and is always looking for a challenge. His absolute favorite things are to be the superstar center of attention and to be praised for a good show.
Tier 2:
Name: Torleif
Species: Cubone
Gender: Male
Ability: Lightningrod
Item: Yellow Scarf
Moves: Bone Club | Bonemerang | Thrash | Bone Rush | Endure | Knock Off
Contest Stats: Tough (6/10)
Notes: Torleif is the son of Tora, and is currently training under his mother. Like his mother, the cubone has talent at coordination, but unlike his mother, he’s easily distracted and unfocused. He’s a young cubone still learning the ways of battle, and figuring out his place in things. He goes with whatever’s happening around him and acts on his impulses.
Name: Fafnir
Species: Chatot
Gender: Male
Ability: Keen Eye
Item: Green Scarf
Moves: Supersonic | Roost | Taunt | Mirror Move | Sleep Talk | Boomburst
Contest Stats: Clever (6/10)
Notes: Fafnir was found by Rien’s father in the crooks of an old, condemned building due for demolition. In need of a new home, Rien’s father passed the chattot onto a young Rien who liked big tough pokemon. He had no idea what to do with a little song bird. The pokemon bonded quickly with the similarly-minded Woden, becoming near inseparable, and so the chattot became a part of the team. Fafnir was never as good at contests as the others, but he helped to open Rien’s mind to training more than just rock-tough pokemon. Fafnir and Sigrund are most commonly found sitting atop Woden, the chattot whistling some toon in a minor key. The bird likes a simple life, and strives to live one.
Name: Darro
Species: Herdier
Gender: Male
Ability: Scrappy
Item: Red Scarf
Moves: Roar | Reversal | Thunderbolt | Hyper Voice | Shock Wave | Wild Charge
Contest Stats: Cool (6/10)
Notes: Though he came much later in Rien’s adventure, Darro has bonded with both Ezaro and the even later caught Miro. The three of them have become a pack of sorts, with Ezaro as their fearless leader. Darro is the most sensible of the three, and is pretty good at making sure things don’t go too far. He’s a stubborn pokemon when he wants to be, but can be bribed with sweet cakes.
Tier 3
Name: Anary
Species: Pancham
Gender: Female
Ability: Iron Fist
Item: None
Moves: Karate Chop | Comet Punch | Crunch | Superpower
Contest Stats: Tough (2/10)
Notes: Anary is a prideful pokemon, who, like a lot of Rien’s pokemon, was passed onto him from his father. In the pancham’s case, her home was destroyed in a forest fire, and she was in need of a new one. She has a strong “I don’t need your help” lone wolf sort of personality that took him ages to crack, but she now holds a respect and liking of Rien. He’s been training her without the aid of his other pokemon, mostly because she won’t listen to anyone else.
Name: Sigurd
Species: Hoothoot
Gender: Male
Ability: Tinted Lenses
Item: None
Moves: Zen Headbutt | Whirlwind | Psycho Shift | Supersonic
Contest Stats: Clever (2/10)
Notes: Sigurd’s home was destroyed in the same fire as Anary’s, and was also passed onto Rien from his father. He quickly bonded with Woden and Fafnir. He can’t carry a tune for the life of him, and he always has this distant look in his eye. He has the tendency to zone off to the point that he’ll fall off his perch.
Name: Miro
Species: Electrike (shiny)
Gender: Female
Ability: Static
Item: None
Moves: Quick Attack | Bite | Electro Ball | Shock Wave
Contest Stats: Cool (2/10)
Notes: Miro looks up to Ezaro and Darro as older brothers. When around one of the two (or, to a lesser extent, any other dog-like pokemon) she mimics their actions. She’s neither as heedless as Ezaro or as formal and controlled as Darro, and while she’s rather naive, she has a good heart and cares greatly for those around her.
Personal:
Name: Tora
Species: Marowak
Gender: Female
Ability: Lightningrod
Item: Thick Club
Moves: Bone Club | Bonemerang | Bone Rush | Endure | Skull Bash | Perish Song | Seismic Toss | Mega Punch | Fire Punch | Focus Punch
Contest Stats:
Notes: Tora was Rien’s first pokemon, and was the leader of his team all the way until he won his fourth ribbon. The marowak once saved Rien’s life but sustained serious injuries in the process, and has since walked with a limp and has been unable to participate in any battles or contests. Tora’s style of fighting is one of putting all of one’s might into every blow, focusing all of one’s concentration on each punch and each swing so as to maximize the damage and force output. She’s a proud and stoic pokemon who’s quick to mentor other pokemon. Since she no longer needs it for battle, the bone she carries has been hollowed out into a flute.
Name: Eydis
Species: Mienfoo
Gender: Female
Ability: Inner Focus
Item: None
Moves: Drain Punch | Meditate | Aura Sphere | Quick Guard | High Jump Kick | Low Kick
Contest Stats:
Notes: Eydis is a young and graceless pokemon whom Ennis has taken under her wing. Much like how Tora is passing on what she’s learned to Torleif, Ennis is passing on her knowledge to Eydis (in fact, the two older pokemon seem keen on proving to the other that their method is the best via their apprentices). What the mienfoo lacks in skill she’s been working to make up for in pure determination. Rien will leave her to practice in the morning and come back in the afternoon to find her doing the same move, in the same spot.
