Name: Estelle Mercer; Stella to close friends.
Age: Twenty-one
Date of Birth: February 1st
Birthplace: Mavro City, Harmonia Island
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Face Claim: Kaori Miyazono | Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
Appearance:
Distinguishing Features: Her ears are pierced, but she doesn't wear earrings.
Height: 5'4"
Character Type: Mana Dorm Warden
Personality:
At a glance, Estelle might seem like a demure young woman, but she’s quite withdrawn and frosty. While she was generally polite and respectful to others, Estelle still carried an air of disinterest around. People were strange to Estelle; she didn’t really understand them, despite living around them for years. She found Pokemon infinitely more tolerable and easy to understand than people, and preferred their company just so. After a conversation or two, people will find she's just socially awkward.
Conversation was hard and painful. She’d rather get lost in a book, or train with her Pokemon than talk to someone, especially a stranger. Still, she tried her best because she wanted to open up more. To her benefit, she was level-headed and rarely angered, making it easy to deal with unruly strangers. Someone could yell at Estelle all they wanted, and she'd barely react to it. She still tried to avoid rude people though.
Underneath her timid demeanor, they'll find Estelle to be brutally honest and perhaps needlessly critical. She holds nothing back, and doesn't see a reason to. If she finds your shirt ugly, she'll let you know. An Estelle without filter was quite harsh and rare. She's also not very expressive. She just frowns all the time like the grumpy person she can be. She dresses in bright colored clothes often, hoping the bright colors will make people think she's approachable.
Personal issues aside, Estelle does care for others. It isn't visibly displayed, but Estelle will go out of her way to help someone in need. And she'll berate them for being helpless while she's at it.
Likes: fairy tales, antiques, sweets, sunsets
Dislikes: rudeness, disorganization, noisy places, tea, Zubats
History:
Born and raised in Mavro City, Estelle was raised by a single mother. Her father left to travel the world when she was little, never looking back. Her parents hadn't been married, so her mother's parents never quite approved. It didn't bother Estelle's mother one bit; she was happy to raise her daughter alone. Her mother was a determined hard-worker, taking on long shifts at her job to support her child.
So, Estelle was alone often. While she was baby-sat by a neighbor when she was too young to take care of herself, it wasn't the same as having her mother around. Estelle kept quiet though, knowing her mother worked too hard to listen to her daughter complain about trivial things. School helped ease her loneliness, but it led to another problem.
Bullying was weird to Estelle. When some kids thought it would be funny to put gum in her hair, she learned humans were rude and mean for no reason. Estelle didn't really care about her hair, but the bullying was annoying. Her books would go missing, her shoes would have gum in them, and they called her a nerd. The kids were sneaky enough not to be caught by an adult – as if that would stop them – and Estelle never told her mother, deeming the bullying unimportant.
Eventually, she decided she has had enough. Estelle took a shortcut down the dark alleys that no other child wanted to, avoiding those mean children. They would never follow her in a place like this, she thought. And honestly, it wasn't that bad. Estelle didn't see what was so scary and dangerous about the alleys.
Then he appeared out of the walls of the alley. A Gastly that followed her all the way home. Maybe he was lonely, maybe he was hungry for souls, or maybe he just liked her. Regardless, he stuck around, despite Estelle telling him to go. She had no interest in a Pokemon like him. He was much too... strange and icky. The Gastly grew on her soon enough, and she found herself enjoying his company.
The Gastly scared off the children. They ran off, calling Estelle cursed and haunted. All of this was fine by Estelle, she was happy to be rid of those nuisances. She didn't cared what they called her; it worked to her advantage even. People started to avoid Estelle, which was fine because Estelle had her fill of humans and their rudeness for one lifetime.
Tragedy stuck when her mother came down with an illness. Her immune system was weaken from stress; her regular hard, long shifts caught up with her. She continued to work though, despite being sick and her daughter's pleads for her to rest. And before Estelle knew it, she had lost her mother. Estelle blamed her mother for her own death. If she had just taken a break, she would've recovered from the illness. It didn't matter anymore though. Estelle was taken by the friendly neighbor who once baby-sat her since Estelle was too young to live on her own.
When she was finally old enough to attend Gray Haven, she spent most of her time in the library. Estelle studied for the most part, when she wasn't just reading for pleasure. She was withdrawn, only having to communicate with others if needed. Gastly was all the company she needed.
Estelle found her calling in battling. The tactical component was exciting to Estelle. She enjoyed a good challenge, and Gastly agreed with her. Estelle's time at the academy was fulfilling, to say the least. She captured and befriended many Pokemon, finding some of her lifelong companions. People were a different story; Estelle had paid little attention to most of her peers.
Graduation was eventful. Her father had decided to attend. It was the first time she ever saw him, and the last if her father stayed true to his word. Their first meeting ended in a shouting match and her father departing, saying his return was a mistake he won't make again.
While Estelle had many options, she chose to remain on Harmonia Island. It was her home after all. She applied to a Warden position at the academy, hoping to contribute something more to the academy.
