Name: Rex Summers Age: 15 yrs Date of Birth: February 17 Birthplace: Lilycove City, Hoenn Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: ? (Hetero?) Face Claim: VY2 Yuma - Vocaloid Distinguishing Features: N/A Height: 5'5'' ft Character Type: Student |
Personality: Rex is clearly a loner, putting effort into making as little conversation as possible, unless you get him to talk about something he likes. His tone can easily be taken as condescending, which is honestly true as he likes to think of himself as a Pokemon whiz - he just lacks the actual experience of battling. He's not keen on making friends, just getting his Pokemon to be the strongest, and then eventually trying to track the Legendaries. Still, it's not impossible to befriend him, as even if he's a loner, he can still get lonely.
Rex is not cuddly with his Pokemon or anything, but treats them with respect and is a lot more casual with them. To adults he is also polite, but only because he had been trained to do so. One may pick up a feeling that it's forced if one listened to him closely. He hardly smiles to other people too, but smirks and smug expressions are fairly common. He is not quick to anger, but can easily be put in a bad mood, which just makes him quieter than usual and grunts more often. He'd prefer to ignore people almost entirely when he's like that.
Also, no physical contact. He'll flinch at you for it. Though really, getting past that, he's not a bad guy or anything.
Likes:
+ Music / Singing / Musical Instruments
As much as he hates his mother and his history of being forced into the performing arts, Rex has inherited her undeniable love and talent for music. His most favourite instrument is the piano, and it follows that his favourite kind of music is of that sort too. He has confidence in his singing ability too, but would only sing when he's alone and/or with his Pokemon.
+ Mythical stories
It may not look like it, but Rex is enthralled with the idea of myths and legends, especially the Legendary Pokemon of the world. In fact, his dream is to encounter one of these Pokemon himself, and if possible do battle with it. He's often carrying a pocket book around with epic-like tales that describe such Pokemon.
+ Exploration/Adventure
Along with his fascination with the mythical, Rex likes exploring for the sake of discovering something that he hadn't known about before. Little crevices and hiding spots in tree trunks - or secret underground caves...those are what amaze him. Essentially the thrill of discovery, and having the feeling that no one else knows of this place but him.
+ Pokemon (Battling)
Rex prides himself in knowing at least a general overview of almost all existing Pokemon that have been discovered. He likes challenging himself on not bringing his PokeDex with him to battles, and so having to strategize base on what he knows of his opponents. Losing puts him in a bad mood though.
+ Swords
Such things fascinate him...he sure wish he could own one, and/or be taught how to use them properly.
Dislikes:
- His mother
Anything related to his mother even without mentioning her name puts him in a sour mood - surfacing memories he'd rather forget. It certainly doesn't help that she's famous amongst coordinators, ugh...
- Reputation
He doesn't like people who put reputation above all else, and certainly does not want to be told if he's doing something for the sake of his reputation. He wants to do things because he wants to, not to make him look good.
- Coordinators
Perhaps his hate for them is skewered and irrational, but the way they do things just to please people...and how they could easily be affected when the spotlight isn't on them, feh. Certainly his perspective is only from his mother, but because of this he'll treat any coordinator with contempt unless proven to him that they're not like his mom.
- Being on Stage
Yep, he has stage fright. It will only kick in if there are people watching him, but otherwise if the battlefield is just he and his opponent, he'll be completely fine.
- Bossiness
Rex likes doing his own thing, so bossing him around is going to get him to retaliate. Unless you want to be fighting against someone that can be like a stubborn Bouffalant, don't try to control him.
History: Rex's childhood was not what one would call enjoyable. His mother is a famous coordinator, while his father had been one of the cameramen who were working with her. The details of their love life weren't very memorable to the boy, but it sounded like something that could come from a movie. Unfortunately, it seemed that things changed when he was born. His mother had wanted for him to be just like her: a successful Pokemon Coordinator, but Rex wanted otherwise. He had seen how just one ignorant person in the audience could affect his mother so much, and he didn't want to be dragged down by that sort of thing. He didn't want to 'perform' - he wanted an accomplishment for himself; that stands on its own two feet no matter what other people say.
Obviously, this did not sit well with his mother. At a young age he had been forcibly sent to a school that forced him into Coordination classes, and he absolutely loathed it. What was the whole point in performing when it didn't do sh*t outside of the stage? He much preferred Pokemon Battling, and if possible would attend those classes too outside of his own. The Pokemon he trained with were his parent's Pokemon or their offspring, but he longed for one to call his own. Meanwhile, he'd also have to attend other activities that would foster his talent, such as the musical arts, dancing, and acting.
As years passed, the relationship between he and his mother grew more strained. He'd frequently prefer just staying with his dad, who was a lot more sympathetic and was completely fine with him focusing on battles rather than performance. His mother would end up spending less time at home, which Rex preferred anyway. One day, she suddenly went to him and asked if he could perform along with her in one of these huge contest events. He had refused, but in the end was dragged out of the house.
Once on top of the platform, it was his first experience of stage fright, and...well...it led to a mess that ridiculed his mother and he for days to come. It was traumatizing more for his mother than Rex, and she never looked at him the same way after that. The lessons somehow continued, and then arguments broke out, which led to shouting matches. His mother was stubborn, yet eventually snapped. It was then he was told he would be transferred to Gray Haven Academy, who had recently opened its doors to Coordinators, and that he was not allowed to come home until he won all five ribbons the school offered.
On that day, Rex only remembered fear - his mother had been so intimidating at that very moment that he had no choice but to yield. Not like he wanted to stay in the house any longer, anyway. Perhaps this was actually a good idea. His father had given him Cadence as a parting gift, and Harmony was assigned to watch over him. With his bags, he stepped out of the house, convinced that he was never to return ever again.
Once in the Academy, Rex would keep in touch with his father. As the initial euphoria of being independent had passed, he had considered if he should actually follow what his mother had said to him should he want to come home. On the one hand, he was not keen on having to learn to be a Coordinator since he never paid attention to class. On the other hand, the challenge was somehow calling out to him. As much as he didn't care for reputation, he didn't want his mother to see him as someone who gave up so easily and back down from a challenge. He figured that for now, he might as well be a great Pokemon trainer and a...passable Coordinator.
