It felt odd to have someone else prepare food for her. At home, while her mother would normally do most of the cooking, she was still expected to help or at least set the table or SOMETHING. It was also pretty common for her to hunt the very food they ate in the first place. Having a place where you could not only eat at just about any time, but people would actually make it for you was just so weird. There were so many different kinds of foods here too. The amount of people it must take to gather this much food and cook it must have been astronomical. In her town, all the food everyone ate was locally grown, raised or hunted. They didn't import anything at all, so the choices were pretty limited too. Seeing this much food in one place, and having this many choices made her head spin. What was she supposed to choose?
Serena spent about an hour indecisively looking around and seeing what would be good to eat. It was fortunate that she came to get some lunch long before lunch time, or it might have been close to dinner time before she'd decide on what to eat. Fortunately, some dishes were easy to rule out since no meal is complete without meat. She didn't even understand why there were meatless options to begin with. If the students didn't get their protein how were they supposed to have energy to do anything at all, let alone do something as difficult as learning?
Unfortunately, her indecision completely defeated the purpose of coming for lunch early. She knew that around lunch time this place would probably fill up pretty fast with hungry students, and there were a lot of students at this school. Serena swore she would never get used to being around this many people at once, so the best thing she could do was avoid it. Sadly, the odd luxuries and choices that city dwellers had that she also swore she would never get used to, meant that as expected, people were starting to pour into the cafeteria before she was able to decide on something. Serena liked people and loved being around them even more, but being around this many at once was just suffocating. All the sound and the visual stimuli started getting to her quickly. Part of her thought she should just leave and eat some of the instant noodles Amelie liked, but after eating a meatless meal the day before she needed something good.
Eventually, she settled on what was more of a breakfast than a lunch, but that was okay because breakfast was good. She had some ham, pancakes absolutely drenched in syrup and some runny eggs with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. It smelled absolutely heavenly. So much so, that she suspected it might actually be better than her mom's cooking, something that Serena had previously thought was impossible. Now, she just had to find a place to sit before she could eat it. Sadly, with the place as crowded as it was, not only was she feeling dizzy, but it was hard to see and she could barely breathe. Not to mention, she was terrified at the prospect at sitting at a table that already had people sitting at it. As much as she would love to talk to them, she didn't want to bother them with her presence.
Thus, she was slowly walking through the cafeteria, looking for an empty table that probably didn't exist at this point. Her senses were being so overwhelmed that she couldn't really see where she was going and try looking for a table at the same time. Serena was walking slowly enough that most of the people seemed to walk around her or just stare at her (which made her even more self conscious), but after a bit of looking around, she felt herself run into something. She let out a quiet grunt as her tray of food went flying into that person. At first, all she could do was stand there blankly, as though the situation hadn't even registered in her brain yet. When she caught up to the present, all she could see was the remnants of her lunch dripping down the person. It was an unusually messy meal for her too. Of course something like this would happen when she picked something like that.
"I-I-I-I" she continued stammering for a bit, her voice caught in her throat. What was she supposed to do in a situation like this? "I-I-I'm so sorry! Um I um...um...I-I'll go get some napkins!"
With that, she darted off before the person could even say anything, her face flushing harder than it ever had before. Of course, running in a crowded room like this just meant she ran into several people on the way to the napkins, which got her more glares and made the lump in her throat bigger. Still not able to think straight, she grabbed as many napkins as she could carry and headed back to the person she ran into. Rather than try to clean up the poor person herself, she just held out her hands and presented the napkins. A few fell to the floor, but most were still usable. Serena kept her head down, unable to even look at the person, so much so that it almost looked like she was bowing.
"H-Here."
