Karl hummed as he nodded as Cole came up with a decent answer. "You are indeed correct, Mr. Cole. This is my Togekiss Kairi. You correctly identified her typing and even knew of a small bit about her species overall and that is a very good answer for not having permission to use your pokedex. One point for Mr. Cole.
A card with a one point shot over to Cole as Kairi twittered in happiness.
Karl hummed as he looked at the others "What Cole has displayed is not that uncommon for people who have been exposed to pokemon before either in training own their own or studying in a school. Such memorization skills and exposure however are not fully needed to be able to identify a pokemon. If I knew nothing about my Togekiss or of the species in general and this was my first time seeing one. I would have just guessed it's a bird pokemon and guessed that because she flew around the classroom when summoned that she knew how to fly and I would have been accurate but I wouldn't have known anything about her fairy typing or what her species is known to do. Back before Pokedexes were invented people didn't have such tools to identify pokemon they only had their eyes, ears, and maybe even noses in case the pokemon had a stench or sweet smell to them. All data we have in the pokedexes comes from a collection of those observations or drawn from legends and other stories.
Now I don’t except you all to know all known pokemon species and all their information by heart and on sight that’s impossible, unless you have a pokedex in your head. But by the end of this class I’m hopeful that you will apply some techniques that I teach you to identify Pokémon. Here’s a little sheet I’ve created to give you some information and techniques on how to identify pokemon.
He waved his hand and a printed sheet slid over to each student’s desk with the following information.
There are 720 known species of pokemon,
All Pokémon have one or two types from 18 different types
The 18 types are the following: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Steel, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Dark, and Fairy.
Those that have two are known as dual types combining two types together sometimes this typing works to their advantage other times it just makes things harder for them.
Each of these types have various weaknesses, resistances and/or immunes and some dual types even have double weakness and/or double resistance.
Every attack of a pokemon has a type to it and depending on what the target pokemon is the amount of damage dealt to that pokemon from that attack changes depending on that type weakness or resistance.
The chart below identifies all pure typing, what they are weak to, resist against, immune to and if the damage dealt by an attack type changes depending on the type of the target
Tips for identifying pokemon without using a pokedex
Appearance: If it looks like a bird or has wings, it’s most likely has flying typing, if it looks like it has metal on it or made of metal, it’s most likely a Steel type, if it looks like a rock or made of rocks, then it’s most likely a rock type. If it looks like a bug then it most likely has bug typing. If it looks like it’s got plants on it, it has Grass Typing, If it has fire on it somewhere, it’s a fire type
Color of Skin or Fur: A strong give away of pokemon is their skin/fur color, many pokemon have colors that go with a certain typing. For example, a green pokemon is most likely a Grass Type, A red pokemon, most likely a fire type, a blue pokemon, most likely a water type. Other notable colors are Brown for Ground types, Black for Dark Types, Yellow for
Electric Types, Purple for Poison, Gray for Rock, Sky Blue or White for Ice.
Their Habitant: Pokemon live in areas they can survive in. Fire, Rock and Ground Types are never seen in the ocean, (Water is strong against those types) and Grass, Bug Ice and Steel Types are never seen in hot places (Fire is strong against those types.) Electric types tend to gather in urban areas where is electricity to feed on while Grass Types go where there is a lot of sun or a fertile forest area. (Grass is a type of Plant) Poison Types love swamp areas and Rock, Ground, and Steel type pokemon loves caves and mountains
Their natural abilities: Pokemon tend to have moves and abilities that match their typing. If they are able to generate and shoot dark energy or create a dark weapon from their hands, they are most likely a Dark Type, If they can punch through walls with a single punch or lift heavy objects then they are a fighting type, if they control things with Psycho Kinetic Powers then they are most likely a Psychic Type, If it can go through walls or vanish from sight, boo it’s a ghost type.
Big Note: First Appearances can be deceiving do not always assume what you first see with a pokemon is the absolute truth.
Karl hummed “Now using these techniques, let’s see if you all can identify pokemon just a little better by matching up pictures of pokemon to their typing” He dealt out six cards to each person.
He gave Serena cards with pictures of a Pikachu, a Squirtle, and a Klink, along with cards that say Fire, Grass, and Electric,
He gave Lithra cards with pictures of an Ekans, a Diglett, and a Vulpix, along with cards that say Dark, Ground, Steel
He gave Cole cards with pictures of a Pinsir, Snivy, and a Poochyena along with cards that say Poison, Water, Bug
Karl hummed “now one of the type cards you hold in your hand is a match to one of the pokemon cards you hold in your hand. The other two type cards belong to pokemon held by one of your class mates. You all work together to figure out what your three pokemon cards goes with which what types. Hint use the techniques I’ve handed out to identify a pokemon by either its color or appearance. Let me know when you are finished
Alright for this you all can take as many posts as you need to talk it out and solve the challenge I’ve presented to you. Images of the pokemon I gave you are below each listing in the topic. The round will end on Thursday at Midnight PST
